■ API standards.
API (The American Petroleum Institute) is the largest U.S trade association for the oil and natural gas industry.
This standard is used in world many countries including Japan.
Oils designed for gasoline-engine service falls under API’s “S” (Service) categories.
Look for the newest categories SN.
Oils designed for diesel-engine service falls under API’s “C” (Commercial) categories.
The letters after "S" and "C" follow in an alphabetical order and correspond to the category development sequence: A, B, C, D, E, F, ..... N, ..... .
■ ILSAC requirements.
The oil displaying this mark meets the current engine protection standard and fuel economy requirements of the ILSAC (International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee), a joint effort of U.S. and Japanese automobile manufacturers.
Most automobile manufacturers recommend oils that carry the API & ILSAC Certification Mark.
The API Service Symbol "Donut" and ILSAC certification Mark "Starburst"—help consumers identify quality engine oils for their gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.

 SAE oil viscosity.
SAE (The Society of Automotive Engineers) has established a numerical code system for grading motor oils according to their viscosity characteristics.
SAE viscosity grading includes the following. The numbers 0, 5, 10, 15 and 25 are suffixed with the letter W (winter), designating they are cold-start viscosity, at lower temperature.
The number after hyphen such as 20 comes without W, being used to denote a hot viscosity grade.
